Theoretical Approaches Cognitive Development And Mental Processes
As a children makes their way through the school curriculum, they become ever more capable and sophisticated in their thinking. This section examines two theoretical approaches to cognitive development and mental processes. Both theories explain how students become sophisticated thinkers, and both offer concrete advice for teacher who are trying to develop their students' thinking.
The first approach-
Piaget's theory-view student as naturally curious explorers who constantly try to make sense of their surroundings.By manipulating objects and by exploring what is new and unfamiliar, they discover and adapt to the world around them, Cognitive development occurs as low-level mental structures because enriched and transform into higher level structures. Piaget’s theory explains what kind of thinking to expect from children and adolescents across different grade levels.By learning Piaget's approach, teaching can offer students developmentally appropriate activities and classroom environments that are stimulating, interesting, and complex enough to nurture higher order thinking.

The second approach-
Vygotsky’s theory-views students as young apprentices who benefit from relationship with competent mentors.Through social guidance and co-operative dialogue, student acquire skill and knowledge.Vygotsky’s cognitive development is a gradual acquisition of skills, knowledge, and expertise. vygotsky’s theory maintains that cognitive growth is a socially mediated activity that occurs in a context of social interaction.By learning vygotsky’s approach, teachers can offer social guidance to help students develop the kind of thinking they need to become effective participants in their culture.
